Closed-die forging—also known as impression-die forging or press forging—is a forging process in which heated, but not liquified, metal is placed into dies that contain the shape of the final component. As force is applied by a press, the metal flows into the die cavities and takes on the geometry of the die.
Because the metal is enclosed by the die during the forging process, closed-die forging can produce complex shapes with excellent dimensional accuracy.
Closed-die forging is widely used to manufacture high-strength components because the process:
· refines the internal grain structure of the metal
· improves strength and fatigue resistance
· produces near-net-shape parts that require minimal machining
This method is commonly used for components that must withstand heavy loads and demanding operating environments.
